The base engine is a more conventional gas powered 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter inline-five-cylinder that makes 177 pounds-feet of torque. TDI models come with a super-efficient turbo-diesel engine. The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel makes 140-horsepower and puts out 236 pounds-feet of torque. A six-speed manual (TDI models) and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic round out the transmission options.Fuel economy ratings are good with the gas engine, but great with the diesel. Gas models return 24/31 mpg city/highway, while TDI models top that with 30 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway.Inside, the Golf comes with plenty of standard features including power locks, windows, and mirrors, air conditioning, cruise control, and an auxiliary audio input.
